General Questions

What is Media Cast?

Media Cast is Enron Communication’s first Internet based application service. Media Cast allows Content Providers the opportunity to distribute higher speed, rich media content to their Internet audience. Free, pay-per-view or subscription based distribution are all fully supported.

How does Media Cast work?

Through an extensive distributed server architecture, Enron Broadband Services replicates RealNetworks G2 formatted content or streams for live and on-demand playout direct to an end-user’s desktop. Both enterprise and consumer content can be delivered at bit rates from 20 kbps to 1 Mbps.

Why is Media Cast different from other webcasting platforms or means of rich media distribution?

Enron Communications places edge servers within Internet Service Provider’s points of presence (PoP). By doing this, content resides one hop from an end-users desktop and streams are now delivered with little or no delay or congestion.

Do end users need any special software or additional Internet connections to get streaming media via Media Cast?

No. Media Cast utilizes existing multimedia players, preferably the new G2 Player from RealNetworks. Media Cast is also completely transparent to an end-user and works over any existing Internet connection.

Does the end user pay for Media Casting?

The end user will typically not have to pay to use Media Cast. He or She will only have to be connected to a content distributor to view rich streaming content which is distributed over the Enron Intelligent Network (EIN). Content Providers (such as ABCNews or Bloomberg) may have subscription-based events which end-users would pay the content providers to access.

What kind of content is distributed via Media Cast?

Media Cast can distribute any rich media encoded with the RealNetworks G2 RealProducer software. Media Cast is primarily targeted at premium content such as Financial and Business news, but can also be used for other types of information such as Real Estate, Telemedicine, Desktop Videoconferencing, Entertainment and Distance Learning.

Is there a separate charge for hard drive or storage space within the EIN?

Not necessarily. Each content provider has up to 1 GB of storage space within the EIN as part of the service. If a content provider consumes more that 1 GB of storage at any time on a monthly basis, the content provider will be billed at $.50 per additional MB.

For example, if 1.5 GB was used, the content provider would pay an additional 500 x .50 = $250 for that month.
